Guiding Growing Minds
The ChallengesToday among many other problems, India is facing the giant issue of HIV/ AIDS with around 2.4 million people already affected by this incurable disease (www.avert.org). People indulging in High Risk Behavior have been mostly affected by it, sadly they are mostly youngsters. They are now seen knocking at the doors of city sexual health clinics. Apart from sexual issues like STD’s (Sexually Transmitted Diseases), teen pregnancies, and abortion, the teens in India are also faced with cyber addiction, doing drugs, smoking, and drinking alcohol. Peer pressure and fitting in are some of the primary reasons that are influencing them to take steps that are risky and dangerous.
The NeedWith this scenario before us, it is essential to provide adolescents and young adults with the right knowledge and information so that they can make informed and responsible choices. And that is what we endeavor through our work at Nirnay. With our work in schools among the adolescents we have seen that students as young as 13 – 14 years have come up with relationship problems, some even disclosing that they have been physically involved with their partners. |
